Dr. Hans Binder, from the University of Leipzig and ABI, will be delivering a presentation titled "Genomics Meets Microscopy: Spatial Single-Cell Transcriptomics in Modern Biomedicine."
Spatial single-cell transcriptomics was recognized as the Method of the Year in 2020, marking a significant milestone in the sequencing revolution. This technology is increasingly being integrated into various fields of biomedicine and molecular life sciences, including precision oncology and developmental biology.
In this presentation, Hans Binder will introduce spatial transcriptomics and explain the bioinformatics concepts used to explore the relationship between genome regulation and the microanatomy of healthy and diseased tissues, all with cellular resolution across both space and time.
The complexity and big volume of data generated by spatial transcriptomics present significant challenges in data science and algorithm development. For example, the need to account for spatial dimensions complicates the extraction of developmental trajectories, and the identification of cell types, states, and their transitions requires novel approaches. Binder will showcase applications of this technology in studying cancer heterogeneity, focusing on melanoma and colorectal cancer, as well as transcriptional programs in microscopic glands essential for maintaining smooth and healthy skin.
Dr. Binder will also discuss the potential impact of this technology on current and future projects in Armenia. Members of his team at ABI will briefly present their findings on understanding cancer treatment resistance using spatial and single-cell transcriptomics.
