Plants, especially grapevines, face a tough time dealing with climate change. A team of researchers at ABI, led by Tomas Konecny and Dr. Hans Binder, studied how grapevines handle the stress of different temperatures. They used bioinformatics methods involving machine learning to examine the biological processes happening inside plant cells.
The team has discovered that, despite grapevines not being well adapted to freezing temperatures, they activate a molecular pathway involving vitamin B1 when the outside temperature approaches the freezing point. However, the role of this pathway in protecting grape vines against frost is not yet fully understood.
They shared their exciting discoveries in the Frontiers in Plant Sciences journal.
The study was supported by a FAST ADVANCE research grant.
