Rolf Apweiler to Deliver Public Guest Lecture at OMICSS-26

The Armenian Bioinformatics Institute will host a public guest lecture by Rolf Apweiler during the OMICSS-26 Genome Bioinformatics Summer School on July 26, 2026.

Titled “The History of Bioinformatics,” the lecture will explore the development of bioinformatics from its early beginnings to its current role as an essential field supporting modern biological and biomedical research.

Rolf Apweiler is an Emeritus Visitor at EMBL’s European Bioinformatics Institute, where he served as Joint Director from 2015 to 2024. He has played an important role in the development of EMBL-EBI and has made significant contributions to protein bioinformatics.

His work includes the development of methods for the automatic annotation of proteins and contributions to internationally important resources such as UniProt and InterPro. He has also supported the development of standards and open-data infrastructure for proteomics and life-science research.

The lecture will be followed by a 30-minute networking session, giving participants an opportunity to meet Rolf Apweiler, speak with him in person, and connect with others interested in bioinformatics and life sciences.
